Propaganda Poster

Image
Propaganda Poster          This is a propaganda poster. I took a picture of myself and then used it as a reference for a portrait made in illustrator. I attempted to go for a minimalistic aesthetic while still retaining the detail. To make it into propaganda, I added the dress shoe looming large behind me. My message was intended to be that people should never be complacent when the autocratic power of capitalists looms over us all. Original Reference Image

Logo

Image
Logo Color             This is a logo meant to represent myself. I used the imagery of a combined form of the genderqueer and the agender symbols. Gender personally means a lot to me so I wanted a representation of myself to be a representation of that. Additionally, the upside-down triangle is an allusion to the symbol used by Nazis to brand gay men and trans women, which has since been reclaimed by queer activists as a symbol for resistance. The symbol I am alluding to is pink which is why I used pink in my colored versions. I tried to keep the logo simple and I believe I succeeded. Sketch Images

Calligram

Image
This project was a calligram, or an image made out of text. The text was a letter to my future self. Or rather, it started as a letter and devolved into an opportunity to wax poetic about positive and negative liberty. As the theme throughout the letter was of liberty and freedoms, I went for the imagery of an arm grasping a flag. I used Adobe Illustrator to create the calligram, primarily employing the "Type on Path" and "Envelope Distort" tools. It cumulatively took about 4 to 5 hours to create. While there are some problems, I am pleased with how this project came out. Reference Image: Letter to the Future (Text Used in the Calligram): Dear Sage of the future, I hope this letter finds you at a time where fascism is not breathing down the necks of effectively everywhere on Earth but realistically that will not be for a long time. There are many things which I hope for you. I hope for you to embrace a love for huma...

Illustrator Tool Tutorial Overview

Image
Howdy, After watching several introductory videos for Adobe Illustrator, I wrote up an overview of  what I learned from each of the videos. Illustrator Tutorials - Pen Tool Beginner's Guide This video provided a basic overview of how to use the pen tool and when to use it. It seems simple enough to use in principle, effectively just connecting points together to create lines and shapes. Creating curves are the same idea but with added control points to affect how the line will curve. Although it will be a difficult learning curve getting used to how to position control points to get a desired result. I will use the pen tool when I want to create my basic building blocks of shapes and lines. One thing the vide suggests is worth noting is breaking complicated shapes into smaller ones to be more manageable (and easier to fix).   Learn Illustrator in 5 MINUTES! Beginner Tutorial This video provided a basic overview of the essential knowledge to get started using Illust...

Canvas

Image
My canvas piece was a variation of the character Isaac from The Binding of Isaac. The game has a very simple art style while still having distinct character designs, which is why I chose it. To create a variation on it, I included the evil eye symbol as part of the game involves becoming increasingly morphed and deformed. I created Isaac through using Adobe Dreamweaver to create a series of shapes (primarily circles, quadratic curves, and Bezier curves). In total, it took me about 8 hours to create from start to finish.     Given that it was my first exploration into working with Dreamweaver, I was really proud of how this turned out. It was pleasantly surprising how fun it was to manipulate code into something recognizable. It was daunting at first, but realizing that it was essentially just geometry reframed how I approached it into something a lot more manageable. I was particularly satisfied with how the eyes came out to create this mix of sad and eerie look ...

A Brief History of the Internet, World Wide Web, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth

Howdy, The inception and history of the Internet, World Wide Web, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi has been a long and complicated one. While overlapping, each are distinct concepts and things. As such, both their shared and individual history are worth discussing. The internet is a means of connecting computers and networks from across the globe in order to communicate with each other. This communication between networks allows for all manners of activities which form the usage of the internet. While the development of the internet was the result of the labor of many different people, the creation of the internet is generally credited to Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn in 1974. The initial purpose of the development of the internet was to be able to connect research networks together to streamline processes across the United States and Europe. Initially it was used in this way to connect computing research centers but soon started to be sold for commercial and personal use. This eventually ...

Introductions

Howdy, I am Sage Boutelle and I am a film and media arts major at the University of Tampa. I am from Tampa so, as you can imagine, I did not have to go very far. I am a lover of pretentious cinema so if anyone wants to hear about niche French films I can provide that. Once, I was qualified for and planning to go to a national competition for high school journalists and filmmakers but that was back in March 2020 and the funniest thing happened.  This class looks like it is going to provide for an interesting semester. At first glance, the assignments for the course look like they will be challenging but in an engaging way. Through this course, I hope to become more familiar with the Adobe software suite, especially Photoshop and Illustrator as my experiences with them thus far have not been pleasant. I am looking forward to working with and learning from Professor Roundtree and hope that this will be an excellent semester. That is all, Sage Boutelle
