Illustrator Tool Tutorial Overview

 Howdy,

After watching several introductory videos for Adobe Illustrator, I wrote up an overview of  what I learned from each of the videos.

Illustrator Tutorials - Pen Tool Beginner's Guide

This video provided a basic overview of how to use the pen tool and when to use it. It seems simple enough to use in principle, effectively just connecting points together to create lines and shapes. Creating curves are the same idea but with added control points to affect how the line will curve. Although it will be a difficult learning curve getting used to how to position control points to get a desired result. I will use the pen tool when I want to create my basic building blocks of shapes and lines. One thing the vide suggests is worth noting is breaking complicated shapes into smaller ones to be more manageable (and easier to fix).

Learn Illustrator in 5 MINUTES! Beginner Tutorial

This video provided a basic overview of the essential knowledge to get started using Illustrator. Illustrator includes a ‘layers’ feature which allows objects to separate on levels on top of one another (and allowing for certain layers to be hidden or locked in) which means that objects can be isolated to work on more easily. The video details how to use the various shape tools which could be useful for simple shapes for when the pen tool would be overkill. Speaking of which, the pen tool, as described in the previous video, creates custom lines to build shapes of all levels of complexity. The video touches on the shape builder tool which appears more complex but is founded on understandable principles. As is a theme thus far, the foundation that Illustrator is built on is understandable even when it gets extremely complicated.

How To Use The Basic Tools in Adobe Illustrator

This video provides an overview of the basic tools needed for working in Illustrator. Tools like the Hand tool and Zoom tool are useful to help hone in and pan on the view of a project without altering the image itself. The Artboard tool helps format the workspace’s dimension as well as being able to work on several separate parts of a project in separate areas while still working in the same project file. The Rotate tool will allow me to (as the name suggests) rotate an object to my liking which will allow me to adjust the angle of an object’s positions in order to get it right. For purposes of flipping an object, the Reflect tool will mirror an object which, will not difficult mechanically, might be hard to use as a result of visualized how an image is mirrored is challenging. In order to write words, the Type tool and its variations can be used to create text either straight on or along a path. As previously described, the pen tool creates shapes through connecting points through straight or curved lines. The selection tool will be the tool I use whenever I need to move entire objects around on the campus whereas the direct selection tool is used for adjusting specific points of a shape or stroke.

That is all,

Sage Boutelle
